Week 5: The vending machine capital of Europe
Cracked into my first interview at work, which brought the usual level of ‘oh right thats whats wrong, and thats what we need to do’ so much easier to see form the outside.
Also did a couple of days cycling around Belgium. Was suprised to see a huge variety of vending machines, including ones for raw meat, one for beauty products, and one that included a entire tub of mayo. -
week 4: Le bonk
I finally started my new job. Nobody is quite sure what they want me to do, but this is depressingly common as a contractor. It will get sorted.
We’ve hit the season where suddenly the allotment has become like a jungle. Plants that didnt exist are suddenly towering over the beds. There is something sort of mad about how something can just appear, where that was just space a flower suddenly exists.
Did a nice 40mile cycle with some excellent chips. Vinegar seems to just not work any more when it comes to chips. What happened to chip shop vinegar? I need to feel my teeth melting,
Not sure about this whole AI thing. It feels more immeidately useful than say blockchain, however hard to know if its a self driving cars situation where it never quite gets going.
This is week 3 of this time of losing my bluetooth headphones in my flat. This time.

Week 3: Out out
Still waiting to get kit sorted for a new contract. Apparently I can’t just collect from the office I have to go into, my options were get it posted or go to London, which is at least a 6 hour round trip. Feels like worst possibly mix of remote and office based worked.
Went to a festival in London with my partner, and had a lovely time. the 90s revival was in full swing, most obviously when the tent for Mood II Swing was absolutely packed.
Finally got a start date for work, which is nice.
Went gig boat rowing and saw a film about Werner Herzog trying to drag a boat up a hill to make a point about man’s hubris. The lack of self awareness was sort of amazing.

Week 2: Birds and bread
With this extended time off, I’m sort of looking for things to do that arent too computer focused, given when I’m working I am all computer, all the time.
I’ve therefore taken up making sourdough, 4 years behind everybody else.
I’m using a tartine recipe, partly becuase thats what everybody on reddit is using, and partly becuase the bread is great.
I have suprised myself by immediately getting quite good results, which is suprising becuase I tried to learn how to make bread with yeast ages in my 20s and just got sort of dense logs.
I’ve also contiuned making biang biang noodles. I cannot biang them so I am rolling them out but they still slap.
finally finished the book that inspired me to start listening to birds. despite loving listening to birds, the book was very dull cannot reccomend.
Went to visit my mum and attend the annual japanese garden society. Went on a garden tour. I cannot comprehend how quickly I’ve suddenly become incredibly middle aged.
